Sniffing out IPv6 with PHP

Tags: ,

I poked around online the other day looking for some PHP code that would do things like tell me whether or not a user was using IPv6. I found some code that did the job after a bit of Googling.

The code was pretty ugly, so I fixed it up. While I was at it, I updated it to optimize it a bit, as well as use conventions found in newer versions of PHP, such as the $_SERVER[] variable array, etc. Further, since I only needed to detect whether or not a user was using IPv6, I was able to cut the code that did IPv6 address compression and uncompression.

So you’ve got a shiny new Nokia E61, E70, N80 or something like that, and you want to connect it to your Asterisk server, eh? No problem. This is an update to an old blog posting. What’s updated? Now it covers the recently released PR3 software for the E-series devices.

OpenWRT 1.0 RC6 IPv6 Howto

Tags: ,

I read the IPv6 Howto over on the OpenWRT wiki. It’s got a lot of superfluous info in it, none of which relates to most US-based broadband users. Huh? Most US broadband customers have connections that are dynamic in nature, and do not use PPPoX or PPTP, but rather use DHCP on a standard Ethernet connection.

Guess what, Macs really do cost less.

Tags: ,

Ok, so the other day, I read a blog entry on TUAW which discussed a cost comparison between the 17” MacBook Pro and the Dell XPS M1710. I didn’t think the comparison was comprehensive enough, so I took it upon myself to do my own.

On the Mac side, I chose one from each of the 3 flavors of portables — the MacBook, the 15” MacBook Pro and the 17” MacBook Pro. Using the specs of those systems as a guide, I selected competing Dell systems that were closest in configuration to those. The only exception was at the 15” size. Dell does not currently offer a 15” notebook that uses a 2.16 Ghz Core 2 Duo processor. As a result, I selected the Thinkpad T60 widescreen version, which offers a 15.4” widescreen with the 2.16 Ghz Core 2 Duo. Further, Dell does not offer a 13.3” system at all, so I selected a 12.1” instead. Choosing the 14” E1405 does not significantly affect the comparison, as the E1405 came in $18 cheaper than the XPS M1210. Rounding out the comparison is the 17” Dell XPS M1710.

‘Tis the Season for Christmas Blonde Jokes…

A Blonde goes to the Post Office to buy stamps for her Christmas Cards.

She says to the clerk, “May I have 50 Christmas Stamps”.

The clerk says, “What denomination?”

The Blonde then says,

“God help us Has it come to this. Give me 6 Catholic, 12 Methodist, 10 Lutheran and 22 Presbyterian.”

That was in this morning’s email. Thanks Lori.

These guys are just scary. If you haven’t heard about it, go read it for yourself.

How can you get to be an adult and not understand the difference between 0.002 cents and 0.002 dollars?

Don’t get me wrong, not everyone at VZW is like this. The guys I know over there (*not* customer service call center guys!) are good guys and are pretty smart to boot. Maybe they should give basic math lessons to their co-workers.

Vista Experimentation with EVDO

Tags: ,

Been doing some Vista testing. I was interested to see if it would be up to snuff as my PeeCee’s primary OS. My big worry was my Verizon EVDO card (the V640 ExpressCard). I hate the VZaccess software (clunky, slow, etc), so I was very happy to find these directions for using EVDO on Vista. The author was using a 5740 model card, but the directions worked just the same for my V640. Nice job.

I can’t believe I just said “nice job” in conjunction with Windows. Yikes.
