So, wasn’t it cool last week when you got your UM175 working under Hardy?  What’s not so cool?  Since it’s not integrated with Network Manager, every time you launch Firefox, Pidgin or anything else that queries NetworkManager for a connection status, you get to go nowhere.  There are guides out there to create scripts that go in /etc/chatscripts and /etc/ppp/peers to integrated with the stock NM that ships with Hardy, but unfortunately, those don’t register as valid Internet connections with NM, as shipped.

Enter the NetworkManager PPA.  This is the development ground for what’s going to be included in Intrepid Ibex, aka Ubuntu 8.10.  It only takes a few minutes to get it started.

1. Add the PPA repo to /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/network-manager/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/network-manager/ubuntu hardy main

2. apt-get update and upgrade the packages, be sure to install the unauthenticated ones.  You may find it easier to do this part with Administration > Update Manager, from the menu.

3. It will probably ask for a reboot when all is done.  Don’t do it yet.  You need to patch one file to make the UM175 work.

4. Open up /usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/10-modem.fdi

At line 175, add a couple of USB ids, specifically 0×3711 and 0×3714, so the line looks like:

<match key=”@info.parent:usb.product_id” int_outof=”0×3701;0×3702;0×3711;0×3714″>

5. Reboot, now you’re nearly done.

6. After login, right click on the Network Manager icon in the notification area.  Edit Connections.  Go to the Mobile Broadband tab, add a new connection.

7. I only filled in a name for the connection, used the following parameters:

  • Phone Number: #777
  • Username: <phonenumber> @vzw3g.com (use your device’s phone # here)
  • Password: vzw
  • Check the “System Setting” box.

8. ???

9. Profit!

To connect, plug in the evdo device, click on the NM icon, select your 3G connection.

Looks like the NetworkManager setup is automatic in the latest version. When I plugged in my UM175 and right-clicked NetworkManager it gave me an “automatic CDMA network” option and it just freakin’ worked. Very cool stuff.

I’d read that was supposed to be the case, and I just tried it earlier today on a Thinkpad running Intrepid Alpha 6. NM did figure out the UM175 was a 3g modem, and did give me the Automatic CDMA Network option as well. Unfortunately, it didn’t work until I added the USB id to the 10-modem.fdi file…

Definitely a step in the right direction, but not quite there yet…

Thank you! I’ve been trying to get my card working and after finding this I was finally pointed to the right file. All I had to do was add the second device ID to the file, since my card was already there just a slightly different version, and I’m up and running. Not sure it’s using the right drivers though as I’m still not getting speeds close to what Windows does when it uses the same card.

    Thanks!

Mostly the same here, except I’m using Intrepid and have a UM150 and I have never needed the username/password.

I just created a “Mobile Broadband” entry and selected a default and just changed the dial number and username (to a single period).

But they should have an EVDO/#777 option in the menu when creating the connection since I think it applies to Sprint, Verizon, AllTel and the rest.

Yep, now that Intrepid has shipped, it also works for me without anything beyond plugging in and telling NM to connect.  No extra user/passwd stuff any longer either.

Seems it doesn’t work for me. Maybe cause I’m way out in the boonies. The card is detected but I can’t seem connect with it. Most likely its my location cause if all of you guys can get it to work without issues then must be on my part. I hope I can get this to work !

One thing to note.  Before Verizon’s UM175 (I assume this is true with other CDMA devices and providers but I don’t know) will work in Linux, it MUST be used in Windows or OS X (using Verizon’s VZAccess program)  to activate the device.  I spent the better part of three days banging my head wondering why it didn’t work.  I tried it in my Mac to make sure it was good hardware, the software activated it, and now it works like a charm!

  9. [...] Coming to you from one right now. Those Ubuntu folks are really on the ball with mobile! I found this really easy instruction and got connected. Two things that threw me… Network Manager [...]

I recently bought a pantech um175vw card from someone who had the contract expire. Little did I know it was not a plug and play usb unit. Is there anyone willing to e me the driver for win vista or tell me where the heck I can get one. Google is not help.
